Photos by John Gorman
HMCS Terra Nova, Gatineau & Fraser,
waiting to be scrapped, June & November 2009.
In early November, 2009, John Gorman emailed me some photos of which I've selected the seven below.
He said in part:
" . . . I took (these photos) at Bedford Institute and the
Naval Armament Depot (N.A.D.), in Dartmouth. Shown are the former HMCS Terra Nova and Gatineau.
Also shown are a couple of photos of the three obsolete submarines berthed nearby and ready to go for
a disposal tender. The two destroyers are being made ready for towing (at the end of 2009) to Pictou,
where they will be systematically dismantled and sold off to recyclers.
I thought it was great that this tender went to the new contractor that now owns the shipyard in
Pictou, Nova Scotia, because it is making 60 plus jobs for the work, is being done here in the
Maritimes, rather than simply sinking them or sending them off to China or Taiwan.
" These photos are small, but my originals are much larger, if anyone wants a larger copy
of any particular ones, just ask. . . . There are plenty of memories there
. . . I am sure there are
some people that didn't know that those ships were still afloat here in Halifax Harbour! "
John posted the bottom photo of HMCS Fraser and
HMCS Cormorant on his Flickr photostream, so I grabbed it from there.
