Photos by John Gorman

Decommissioned former RCN submarines
waiting to be scrapped, November 2009.

In early November, 2009, John Gorman emailed me some photos of which I've selected the four below. He said in part:

" . . . I took (these photos) at Bedford Institute and the Naval Armament Depot (N.A.D.), in Dartmouth. Shown are the former HMCS Terra Nova and Gatineau. Also shown are a couple of photos of the three obsolete submarines berthed nearby and ready to go for a disposal tender. . . .

" These photos are small, but my originals are much larger, if anyone wants a larger copy of any particular ones, just ask. . . . There are plenty of memories there . . . I am sure there are some people that didn't know that those ships were still afloat here in Halifax Harbour! "

June 25, 2010 update: Donald Courcy adds this: " The three submarines in the photos are: HMCS Okanagan, inboard, HMS Olympus in the middle and HMCS Ojibwa, outboard. HMS Olympus was transferred to Canada in 1989 but was never commissioned into the Canadian Navy. . . . (she) was used for training alongside the jetty.

" HMCS Ojibwa, will soon be towed to Lake Erie where she will become a museum. Also note that HMCS Onondaga (not pictured here) was towed to Rimouski, Quebec in 2008 and became a submarine museum in 2009. "
