His name and birthplace are only partially legible in the census microfilm, but the following email of August 22, 2012, from his great-grandson, John Barker-Hahlo, has cleared up the confusion as well as provided more information:
". . . His (name) should read MACDONALD, William Balfour. He was a Commander in the Royal Navy but was appointed Captain of HMCS Niobe on its transfer to the RCN in 1911. He was born in Victoria, BC and was brought up at his father's home, Armadale, which may be the illegible part of his home address. His father was a Senator. "
