At 0825 hours on 16 June 1955, the "S" Class submarine HMS Sidon was lying alongside the depot ship HMS Maidstone at Portland (England) when one of her torpedoes exploded. In June, 1973, crewmembers of HMCS Okanagan travelled from Portsmouth to Portland to lay a wreath on behalf of the crew of HMCS Okanagan, at the grave of PO2 L.D. McLeod, a Canadian sailor who was one of 13 officers and men killed in the explosion. CPO1 Sam Jennings was a member of the crew of HMS Sidon at the time of the explosion.
