Marines of HMS Niobe, about 1900
This is a stereoscope slide which I've had for years. Title is: "Marines of H.M.S. Niobe cheering news from the front, Cape Town, South Africa." Slide is copyright 1900 by Underwood & Underwood, Publishers. What I find wonderful about this photo is that it captures an informal moment even though the men would have been gathered and posed for the "photo op". Interestingly, the only face which has been re-touched and "formalized" is that of the officer and he is the only one who looks fake.
